Ice & Snow - Williamston

12/23/2013

Saturday night, we had an ice storm. Some of the ice melted during the day, but most of it is still on the trees. Last night, we had snow. The snow changed the look of the ice covered flora. It went from crystal to white. See what you think.
You can see the snow on top of the ice
A closer look
These arctic willows were standing yesterday
This burning bush is even closer to the ground today
The ice and snow are obvious on the maple, but barely noticeable on the evergreen
The snow and ice are not as noticeable here
Further out, they look like snow trees
Plenty of ice on these branches
The next three were taken at a park near Haslett
You can see the snow falling
The last photos are from a different perspective; the widow's walk on the front of the house
You can see where the limb broke off of this tree
Curly ice
Looking down the street
This is one of my favorites
This is not a weeping willow. Many of the trees are weeping because of the ice
One more icy tree
Thanks for stopping by.

Ice Storm - Williamston

Last night a big chunk of the lower peninsula was coated with freezing rain. Ice storms are my least favorite type of winter weather. I would rather have a foot of snow than a quarter inch of ice. Snow can cause headaches, but ice can cause more damage. Ice is dangerous. It is also beautiful. Here is how my yard looked this morning.

Miscellaneous - Lansing & Williamston

Squirrel

Early last week as I walked past the Capitol, I noticed this little squirrel with a white tail. It was unusual, so I had to stop and take a photo.
Picture
Seeing this little guy reminded me that several years ago, there were some white squirrels a few miles from our house. They were even more unusual, but I was never able to get a picture of them.

Red Cedar River

One of my favorite spots in Williamston is the Red Cedar River. I have taken quite a few photos there over the years. It is especially interesting in the winter. Because of the rapids, the water keeps moving, but as it splashes, the water freezes in interesting shapes.
Picture
This limb sticking out over the river catches the splashes and the water freezes.
Picture
The ice is coating the rock on the far shore.
Picture
This small limb hangs down just far enough to gather ice from the water that splashes on it.

Various pieces of detritus collecting ice.

Here is a closer look at the ice covered limb.

Here are a couple of diehard Oregon fans. That water is too cold for me!
Thanks for taking a look,

Harris Nature Center - Meridian Township

I spent some time walking around Harris Nature Center today. The weather has turned cold, so most of the animals are not very active. The squirrels and the birds seem to stay active all year. I did not get any good photos of squirrels. They were too shy. However, I did get some other photos. Here they are.

Birds

Picture
This downy woodpecker was on the other side of the river.
Picture
A red bellied woodpecker keeping an eye on me.
Picture
This could be the same woodpecker, but it was a lot closer.
Picture
I think this is the same woodpecker in a different tree.

Fungi

Picture
The fungus that grows on wood is fascinating. At first, I thought this was snow or frost.
Picture
This dead tree supports a variety of life.
Picture
These fungi looked almost like butterflies.
Picture
This shelf fungus was beautiful in the sunlight.
Picture
This fungus made the tree look like it had lips.

Water

A reflection of what is on the other side of the river.
Picture
These rocks just below the surface made the water ripple in intricate patterns.
Thanks for taking a look,
Rob
